Things to Do
⢠When you see homophobia in a movie, find out who the producers and distributors are. You can find this information in newspaper ads for the movie.
⢠Write a letter to the producers and distributors complaining about the movieâs homophobia.
⢠Discuss your observations with others. If they agree with you, encourage them to write also.
⢠When you see a positive depiction of the gay and lesbian experience in a movie, write to the producers and inform them of your support.
⢠When a TV network presents a program that depicts gays and lesbians in a positive way, call or write to the network informing them of your support. TV networks are constantly under pressure from antigay and lesbian forces not to depict the gay and lesbian experience. Your call or letter will counteract this negative pressure.
⢠Pay attention to which corporations support positive gay and lesbian programming with advertising and buy their products.
⢠When you see a homophobic program on TV, record the program and be sure to include the advertisements. It is important to know which corporations support homophobia with advertising.
⢠Call or write to the network responsible for homophobic programming and express your concern and disappointment that they are promoting homophobia.
⢠Call or write to networks that succumb to pressure from antigay and lesbian forces. For example, the Fox network caved in to pressure from the religious right and censored a kiss between the two gay characters on Melrose Place.Let Fox feel some pressure from the other side of the issue.
⢠Watch gay and lesbian programming on cable and PBS. PBS presents a regularly scheduled gay and lesbian series called In The Life. The schedule varies from station to station, so call 800-62 7-ONTV to find out when itâs on in your area.
⢠Join the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and become involved.
⢠Report positive and negative depictions of the gay and lesbian experience in the media to GLAAD and to media columnists of the gay and lesbian publications Out, Genre, and The Advocate(see pages 119â120).
⢠When you become a member of GLAAD you will receive their newsletter. In it they provide phone numbers and addresses of the organizations that need either to be thanked or reprimanded. Be sure to follow GLAADâs advice and take the actions they recommend.
